This page explains exactly what ownership means in Open UGC & Beyond, without technical jargon.

Ownership Is a Fact, Not a Feature​

In most platforms today, “ownership” means:

  • You can access your content
  • Until the platform changes its rules
  • Or shuts down
  • Or revokes access

That is permission, not ownership.

With OGAL, ownership is recorded in a public ledger that platforms cannot override.

The Three Things You Own​

When you mint an OGAL asset, you own three things permanently:

1. The Asset’s Identity​

Your asset has:

  • A unique, canonical identity
  • A permanent reference
  • A history that cannot be rewritten

Even if the content evolves, the identity does not.

This is what allows long-term reuse and provenance.

2. The Right to Update It​

You control:

  • When metadata changes
  • When content updates
  • Whether the asset is active or inactive

Updates require proof of ownership. No platform can update your work for you.

If you sell or transfer the asset, update rights transfer with it.

3. The Right to Reuse It Anywhere​

Your asset is not locked to:

  • One game
  • One marketplace
  • One application
  • One company

Any platform can support OGAL assets. Any platform can stop supporting them. Your ownership does not change.

What Ownership Does NOT Force​

Ownership does not force you to:

  • Monetize your work
  • Sell NFTs
  • Create scarcity
  • Gate access
  • Promote yourself

You can create purely for reuse and visibility.

Value emerges naturally when others build on your work.

Ownership vs Monetization​

Ownership comes first. Monetization is optional.

You can:

  • Keep assets free forever
  • Monetize later
  • Monetize only when bundled with others
  • Never monetize at all

The system does not pressure you. It gives you optionality.

What Happens If a Platform Disappears?​

Nothing happens to your ownership.

  • Your asset still exists
  • Your identity is intact
  • Your update rights remain
  • Your work can appear elsewhere

Platforms are replaceable. Your work is not.

Collaboration Without Trust​

When others reuse your asset:

  • Your ownership remains intact
  • Your identity is preserved
  • Attribution is machine-readable
  • Revenue intent (if any) is declared, not negotiated

This allows collaboration without contracts, gatekeepers, or special deals.

Ownership Over Time​

Think long-term.

Your asset can:

  • Appear in many experiences
  • Be updated over years
  • Become a standard building block
  • Accumulate reputation

Ownership compounds. Attention does not.

Traditional UGC:

  • Platforms own the rails
  • Creators rent access

Open UGC:

  • Creators own the rails
  • Platforms compete to support them
