Architecture Overview
The Open UGC & Beyond Ecosystem (Holistic View)
Open UGC & Beyond is not one product. It is a stack of interoperable tools and protocols, each with a clear responsibility, designed to compound together.
At a high level:
- DC3 creates content
- OPP packages content
- OGAL assigns ownership and rights
- Toolbelt + SDKs make content usable in real experiences
Each layer is independently useful, but together they enable something fundamentally new.
1) DC3 – Digital Collectible Collection Creation
The creation layer
DC3 is where content begins.
It enables creators and studios to:
- Design full collections with structure, rarity, and rules
- Generate validated media and metadata at scale
- Output clean, deterministic, on-chain ready collection data
DC3 focuses on production quality and repeatability. It answers the question: “How do creators reliably manufacture high quality UGC?”
But on its own, DC3 produces assets, not systems.
That is where OPP enters.
2) Open Package Protocol (OPP)
The packaging and reuse layer
OPP defines how UGC is bundled, referenced, and reused across games and applications.
Its purpose is to turn individual assets and collections into portable, composable packages that can move safely between contexts without breaking.
OPP answers the question: “How does UGC survive reuse, remixing, and cross-game travel?”
What OPP does
OPP standardizes:
- How assets, metadata, dependencies, and rules are bundled together
- How versions, updates, and compatibility are declared
- How packages reference external content without duplication
- How reuse is explicit, trackable, and deterministic
An OPP package is not just “some files in a zip”.
It is a declared unit of reuse, with:
- Clear boundaries
- Clear inputs and outputs
- Clear rules for how it can be consumed by games and tools
This is what allows UGC to scale beyond a single game without collapsing under custom glue code.
3) OGAL – Ownership, Rights, and Persistence
The ownership and permissions layer
OGAL sits above packaging and below runtime.
Once a package exists (via DC3 + OPP), OGAL:
- Attaches ownership to the package or its contents
- Enforces royalties and attribution
- Controls who can update, fork, or extend an asset
- Makes UGC persistent across time, teams, and games
OGAL answers the question: “Who owns this, who earns from it, and who can change it?”
Without OGAL, reuse becomes fragile and trust-based. With OGAL, reuse becomes permissionless but accountable.
4) Toolbelt + Unity SDKs
The runtime and adoption layer
This is what turns standards into shipped experiences.
The Toolbelt and SDKs:
- Upload and resolve manifests and media
- Verify ownership and permissions
- Reconstruct packages at runtime
- Integrate UGC directly into Unity games with minimal friction
They answer the question: “How do developers actually use all of this without reinventing the wheel?”
This layer ensures Open UGC is not theoretical. It runs in real games, on real devices, with real players.
How the Layers Work Together
In sequence:
- DC3 produces high quality, structured UGC
- OPP packages that UGC into reusable, portable units
- OGAL assigns ownership, rights, and economic rules
- Toolbelt + SDKs make those packages usable in live games
Each layer compounds the value of the others.
No single layer dominates. No single layer becomes a bottleneck.
That balance is the point.
What This Means for Developers
Developers are no longer forced to choose between:
- Total control and zero creator economy
- Chaos and unmaintainable mod systems
With Open UGC & Beyond, developers can:
- Integrate UGC without surrendering engine control
- Accept creator-made content without custom pipelines per creator
- Reuse the same UGC across multiple games or modes
- Trust that packages are well-formed, versioned, and compatible
- Offload creation and experimentation to the community safely
Developers gain leverage, not risk.
They build the game and the rules. Creators expand the universe.
What This Means for UGC Creators
Creators are no longer making disposable content.
They can:
- Create once and see their work reused across games
- Own their creations instead of donating them to a platform
- Earn from reuse, not just initial publication
- Build reputations around durable packages, not one-off mods
- Collaborate without fragile permission chains
Creators stop chasing visibility. They start building infrastructure-level content.
What This Means for Players
Players are the final beneficiaries.
They get:
- Faster content growth without quality collapse
- Levels, items, and experiences that persist over time
- Cross-game continuity instead of isolated silos
- Communities that build with the game, not just around it
UGC stops feeling experimental. It starts feeling like a living world that grows intelligently.
The Core Shift
Traditional UGC systems treat content as:
“User uploads for this one platform.”
Open UGC & Beyond treats content as:
“Reusable building blocks in an open ecosystem.”
DC3 creates them. OPP packages them. OGAL protects them. The Toolbelt delivers them.
That is the holistic system.
